I'm Jessica Nickerson, a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) and the person behind Nickerson Counselling, an private counselling practice based in Edmonton, Alberta.
Becoming a counsellor wasn't a straightforward career path for me. My work and education have moved through different spaces, but I keep coming back to the same questions: What helps us feel connected to ourselves and others? What happens when the ways we've learned to cope no longer serve us? And how do we find our way forward when we aren't quite sure what that looks like?
Before becoming a counsellor, I worked in community settings supporting people navigating grief, isolation, mental health concerns, and difficult life circumstances. I also spent time exploring hope and resilience with young people and their communities. These experiences continue to shape how I understand people's lives within the larger contexts of their relationships, histories, cultures, and resources.
I hold a Master of Education in Counselling Psychology from the University of Alberta. My clinical training has included working with adults and young people experiencing anxiety, grief, trauma, complex trauma, relationship concerns, and challenges related to identity, attachment, and emotional regulation.
Outside of counselling, I'm a long-time yoga practitioner, avid reader, and someone who feels most at home in nature or in a good conversation. I'm interested in philosophy, spirituality, mythology, and the many ways people have tried to understand what it means to be alive. I tend to be curious about the places where different ideas meet, rather than feeling the need to choose just one way of looking at things.
My approach is person-centered, collaborative, and trauma-informed. It's also been shaped by many years of yoga practice and training in mindfulness, somatic approaches, and Hakomi-informed work. I'm interested in the ongoing conversation between our minds and bodies, and in the ways our bodies sometimes tell us things before we have words for them.
I don't believe therapy needs to be complicated or that there is one particular method that works for everyone. I draw from different approaches, but the relationship we build and your experience of the process matter more to me than following a particular formula.
I've always been a little fascinated by the spaces in between things. The threshold between one chapter and the next, the moment when something familiar no longer fits but whatever comes next hasn't quite taken shape. Maybe that's partly why I'm drawn to counselling. So many people come to therapy during these in-between places. Sometimes something has happened and life has been turned upside down. Sometimes nothing looks particularly wrong from the outside, but something inside no longer feels right.
I don't see those moments as failures. Often, they're invitations to pay attention.
I'm also aware that being a counsellor doesn't put me outside of the human experience. I know what it's like to be uncertain, to question what you thought you wanted, and to find yourself becoming someone you didn't quite expect. I don't bring my personal experiences into therapy as though your story should resemble mine, but they do contribute to the humility and openness I try to bring to the work.
Ultimately, I don't think people need someone to tell them how to become a better version of themselves. I think most of us need places where we can be honest enough to discover what is already there, what has been lost or pushed aside, what we've been carrying, and what might be possible from here.
That's the kind of space I hope to create at Nickerson Counselling: a place to slow down, feel a little less alone, become curious about your own experience, and find your way toward whatever comes next.
